The Legend of Roro JonggrangWhile historical data confirms it was built by a royal dynasty, local folklore tells a much more romantic story. According to Javanese legend, a powerful prince named Bandung Bondowoso wanted to marry a beautiful princess named Roro Jonggrang.To reject his proposal politely, the princess set an impossible condition: he had to build 1,000 temples in a single night. Using his supernatural army of genies, the prince almost succeeded, completing 999 temples. Realizing she was about to lose, Roro Jonggrang ordered the village women to pound rice and light fires, tricking the roosters into crowing early.Furious upon discovering the deception, Bondowoso cursed Roro Jonggrang, turning her into stone. Folklore says her petrified body became the beautiful statue of Goddess Durga inside the main Shiva room.
